Customer Appreciation Month at Central Park Laser…Here are some tips to help you put some extra “care” into your daily skin care

September is Customer Appreciation Month at Central Park Laser…Here are some tips to help you put some extra “care” into your daily skin care.

1. Stay out of the sun! Uv rays are damaging to your epidermis. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer.

For the most complete sun protection:

  • Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply sunscreen generously, and ALWAYS reapply every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or perspiring. We recommend VI Derm SPF 50.
  • Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest. Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Brands like Coolibar and Solumbra make SPF protection clothing— which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

2. Don't smoke

Smoking increases aging and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking constricts the blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients.

Smoking also damages collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are the fibers that give your skin strength.

If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit. Ask your doctor for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking. If you are a recent quitter some treatments like laser genesis and oxygen facials can help reverse the damage done to the skin from smoking.

3. Use a gentle cleanser. A common mistake most women make is using cleansers with harsh exfoliating properties like scrubs or cleansers with glycolic acid in them. Overusing these products twice a day or even daily leads you into an unhealthy cycle: The skin dries out, the break out subsides, and then a week later the breakout is back and the cycle continue. This damages the natural lipid barrier of your skin.

Why does this happen? When the skin is excessively dried out it starts to over produce oil, which leads to another break out. The best thing to do is use a gentle cleanser daily like a milk cleanser or the VI derm gentle cleanser and exfoliate once to twice a week. This allows your skin to balance itself and keep bacteria at bay.

Daily harsh cleansing and shaving can take a toll on your skin.

Limit bath time. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Limit your bath or shower time, and use cool water rather than hot. Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose a gentle cleanser.

5.) Always moisturize, even if you have oily skin! Whether your skin is dry, normal, or even oily, a good moisturizer and gentle cleanser can help slow the aging process.

What is a good moisturizer? A product that will gently add moisture, or seal the moisture you have achieved to help your skin stay hydrated. A great moisturizer depends on which skin type you are and your skin's individual needs.

If your skin is very dry it is recommended to use a moisturizer with vesicular emulsion. This technology uses microscopic spheres that are alternating layers of moisture and water which slowly release throughout the day. This continual moisturization keeps the skin pump and moist. What is the most important skin care product to apply to the skin? A great hydrating serum, serums are the most impactful product to apply on the skin. A vitamin rich serum applied twice daily can diminish breakouts, and assist with anti-aging. We recommend the Vi Derm Hydrate.

What serum is right for my skin? This, unfortunately is not a one size fits all, it greatly depends on your skin type and skin conditions. It is recommended to speak with a skin care professional in order to choose which serum will best address your skin care issues.
